He married the actress Rosamund Dickson in 1964 (d2005) and they opened their own bookshop, bookworms in Helensburgh at the beginning of the seventies.
He has redesigned and rebuilt several houses and landscaped gardens: has designed stage settings and costumes (M. Ragou, Iolanthe) and written magazine articles. His first full length book THE FULL ROUND, the several lives and theatrical legacy of Stephen Joseph, was published in 2006 to acclaim.
He moved to Italy in 1995 and has recently begun a career as a portrait artist working with oils on canvas. He has exhibited with the Minerva Gallery in Cortona and is currently working on SIDE BY SIDE, his personal story of the creation of the Traverse Theatre.
