He was born in 1937 in Woodford, Essex; left school as fast as he could and began his career in the offices of one of London’s leading impresarios, Jack Hylton who at that time was presenting Paint Your Wagon as well as Arthur Honnegar’s Joan of Arc at the Stake and a Circus at Earls Court. After his national service he worked as stage-manager in repertory at Bromley, Pitlochry, Perth and at the Library Theatre in Scarborough and on tour with the Welsh Children’s Theatre company. |

Fra il 1962 e il 1964 fondò e diresse il teatro come regia artistica del “Traverse Theatre” di Edinborgo – uno dei più importanti teatri sperimentali della Gran Bretagna. Fu il regista al Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Bournemouth, Cardiff; poi il Midlands Arts Center di Birmingham. Mise in scena la prima “Theatre-go-Round” per la R.S.C. di Londra; poi è stato anche regista per la stagione del Teatro dell’Arena di Scarbourgh ed anche a Stoke on Trent. |
