In Edinburgh, in 1962 he designed, built was Manager and first Artistic Director of the avant-garde Traverse Theatre in James Court. There he directed several British premieres, earning acclaim far and wide. Of Alfred Jarry’s UBU ROI the dramatic critic for The Scotsman wrote “If the Traverse should shut down. . . it would have justified its existence by Terry Lane’s production . . .”
In 1964 he left to run Stephen Joseph’s Theatre in the Round company, directed for the R.S.C. in London and two seasons at the Pitlochry’s Festival Theatre.
He was the first Director of Productions at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham and elsewhere directed MY FAIR LADY, Oh, WHAT A LOVELY WAR; and on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, M. RAGOU and NATIONAL HEALTH.
